Walter E. Hunzeker was born January 3, 1945 to James L. Hunzeker and Maurece C. (Christensen) Hunzeker in Humboldt, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm southwest of Humboldt and attended St. Johns Reform Church. He was baptized in April of 1946 and was later confirmed in November of 1958. Walter attended grade school at Dry Branch District No. 2 and went on to attend High School at Humboldt High School where he graduated in 1962.

In September of 1962 Walter signed up for the army and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He later served in the army reserves until he was honorably discharged in July of 1970. Walter was proud of his service and continued to honor the services through the American Legion where he earned the status of District 13 Commander.

Wittwer Brothers Construction employed Walter in 1964 as a scraper operator. In 1967 he left Wittwer Bros. Construction to pursue his love of farming. Walter married Linda Prine in September of 1968 and they made their home on a farm southwest of Humboldt. To this union was born three boys, Greg Allen, John David and Brian Dean.

Walter was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 1977. He was able to stay on the farm until 1983 when he and his family moved to a home in Humboldt. In 1996 Walter move into Colonial Acres Nursing home where he become a staple at the front door. He would greet every person who came in the door and strike up a conversation. Walter did not know a stranger.

Throughout his life, Walter was known as Wally to all his friends and family. He always looked forward to all the aunts, uncles and cousins coming back to visit every summer. Some of his fondest memories were from these times.

Walter entered into eternal life on November 19, 2020 at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 16 days.

He is survived by three children, Greg and wife Karen of Tecumseh, John and wife Angie of DuBois and Brian and wife Jodi of Ridgefield, Washington, grandchildren Erika (Tristan) Attebery of Lincoln, Erin Hunzeker and Jordan Hunzeker of Tecumseh, Stella Hunzeker and Ayden Hunzeker of DuBois, Brynnley Hunzeker and Hayden Hunzeker of Ridgefield Washington, mother Maurece C. (Christensen) Hunzeker of Lincoln, brother Larry (Michelle) Hunzeker of Humboldt, Sarah (Gordon) McCamley of Georgetown, Texas, Ruth (Bryan) Grosscup of Lincoln, Roger (April) Hunzeker Sun City, Arizona and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Wally was preceded in death by his father James L. Hunzeker and niece Alisha Hunzeker.

Graveside Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at the Humboldt Cemetery, Humboldt, Nebraska, with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating with full military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the Harvey-Mann American Legion Post #269 of Humboldt. Interment was in the Humboldt Cemetery, Humboldt, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska.
