Southeast Co-op becomes Farmer’s Co-op

Southeast Cooperative in Pawnee City is now Farmer’s Cooperative. Southeast and Farmers merged effective Sept. 1, with Southeast being the company that merged into the larger company. Farmer’s did have 45 communities and now can add 12 more with the merger.

Gyhra triplets start kindergarten in Pawnee City

Sometimes trouble times three, sometimes joy times three, the Mike and Bridget Gyhra family enjoy life with their triplets. Breonna, Ericca, and Denielle are 6 now and have just started kindergarten at Pawnee City Schools. It was quite an event when they came into the world in 2008.

County budget hearing set for Sept. 2

The Pawnee County budget for 2014-2015 shows an increase of $213,345.84 in the property tax request over last year. The levy went up about 1 percent and there were a couple of reasons the property tax request went
up, which for the next year is $1,446,546.79. The total proposed budget of disbursements is $7,369,953.97. Last year it was $5,396,716.22. The property tax request is still lower than it was two years ago

Eric Klepper Run draws more than 500

DUBOIS – She’s not a poker player, but she had the winning hand in the 8th Annual Eric Klepper Memorial Fun Run in DuBois Saturday. More than 500 people gathered to honor the life of one of their friends and neighbors. We know it was 500 because they cooked meat for 500 and ran out. Hanna Brumbaugh, a nurse at the Pawnee Clinic, drove to the win with four aces.

Patriotic Art Contest Winners

Each school year, the VFW Ladies Auxillary sponsors a Patriotic Art Contest for students grades 9-12. Local winners for the 103- 1-4 contest are first place Colten Fisher, second place Courtney Mathewson and third place Levi Wilcox. Prizes awarded were $50, $25, and $15. Colten Fisher also won second place in State. He was awarded $100. Congratulations to those artists. Their patriotic works, accompanied by each artist’s explanation of  patriotism expressed in their art, can be viewed at Pete’s Pharmacy. Barbara Parker looks at the winners in the window at Pete’s

Assisted Living Project moves ahead

The Assisted Living Facility project is moving forward. In the middle of July it got 501c3 status. That will allow them to take donations directly for the facility that are tax deductible. Before that happened, the Community Foundation took the donation and ear marked them for the facility. The Board is currently having the financial performa prepared. This will tell the USDA what the financial feasibility of the project is.

Lewiston school board votes in renovation

Lewiston will add on to the school. At Monday night’s School Board meeting, the Board voted 6-0 to proceed with a renovation project that could top one million dollars. This all started in 2012 when the school district got a donation of $250,000 from someone who didn’t want to be named. That started the district thinking about what to do with the money

The story of the Great Pumpkin

Will a Pawnee City pumpkin set the state record for weight? That burning question will be answered by the time Harvest Bash rolls around on Oct. 11. The Pawnee City celebration features many things but one is a contest to see who can grow the largest pumpkin, the largest watermelon, the largest field pumpkin, the largest green squash, largest tomatoes, and largest long gourd.
