Election 2014 created a few surprises

“He’s a pretty happy camper,” Paula Darling said of her son-in-law Rob Schafer. Schafer won the Regent race with Steve Glenn. Schafer was on his way to the Dominican Republic and couldn’t be reached for a reaction to his victory. Glenn had gotten more votes in the primary than Schafer, but they were the top two vote getters so they paired off in the general election. Glenn had out spent Schafer.

Tomek reaches new heights with hobby

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Milan Tomek from Table Rock and he is flying his powered parachute. Coming back to Pawnee City on Highway 8 one a couple of weeks ago, I spotted an object flying over a field. I stopped the car and got out and took pictures. I didn’t know what it was until I could see a man guiding this aircraft. I was curious so I tracked him down at the airport

Bad checks being written locally

Three Falls City people are accused of writing bad checks in the area. Beatrice police issued a warning about James and Debra Bassett writing bad checks in that city. They have been in Pawnee County. Debra Bassett is charged with writing a bad check and so is Kristi Bassett.

Veterans Day November 11th

Byford Metzger was recently honored for 70 years as a member of the American Legion. The 89-year-old Pawnee City man is also a member of the VFW. He is looking forward to another  Veterans Day celebration Tuesday,
Nov. 11. He said it is a day to remember the veterans and to get us thinking about peace

Voters go to polls Tuesday, November 4

“It’s so peaceful out here,” Deb Klein said as she sat on her porch a couple of weeks before the election. She is the only candidate running for mayor of Pawnee City. She likes to sit on her front porch to take in those peaceful moments. As mayor, she will have moments that won’t be as peaceful

Three vying for 2 Pawnee City, City Council seats

Three people are running for the Pawnee City City Council, and the two top vote getters in the Nov. 4 general election will get in. It could be very close between incumbent Charlie Hatfield and wanna-bes Mark Sunneberg, Jr.
and John Wissler. Gale Nutter has withdrawn from the race but will be on the ballot

Tubbesing retires after more than 40 years in ministry

When pastor Ken Tubbesing was driving to Denver in 1972 to see a friend, he drove through Nebraska and came back through Kansas. He didn’t like the ride much and never thought he would spend much time in either state. God had different plans and this past week he retired after 41 and half years as pastor of a church. Some of those years were spent in Nebraska and some in Kansas.

New Nebraska ag sales tax law causing confusion

The new Nebraska Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Sales Tax Exemption is causing confusion. One business owner called last week to ask for an article on to clarify the issue. LB 96, passed in the legislature last spring, calls for a sales and use tax exemption for repair and replacement parts used to repair agricultural machinery and equipment
