We started the year 2014 off rockin’ with the story on the DuBois Rock Quarry. They were getting ready to move into new digs, if you will excuse the pun. 11 months to the day he robbed Casey’s at gunpoint, Michael Engstrom was sentenced for the crime.

Whew! We finally get a break

Both Pawnee City and Lewiston schools are on break starting Dec. 22 and the students come back Jan. 5. We asked several students what they will be doing with their precious time off. Here’s what they had to say. Macey Gyhra, Pawnee City: My break will consist of wrapping presents, reading books, and making Christmas cookies and other desserts with my mom and my sisters.

Class act wins state championship

Senior Hannah Davis said it seemed like forever before they announced the winner. They announced second place and then it came. Pawnee City, state one-act champions, in Class C2. It was the first time a team from Pawnee
City has won the play title.

Pawnee City one-act team goes to state

The Pawnee City High School one-act team won districts at Nebraska City Lourdes last week, and will be headed to state competition Thursday in Norfolk at 10 a.m. “They have a fantastic theater and great  facilities,” coach Laura Bloss said of the upcoming competition at state.

Klein takes over as mayor of Pawnee City

Dressed in his business suit with a Santa decorated tie, Mayor Duane Westing handed a present to Councilwoman Deb Klein – the mayor’s job. Westing stepped down as mayor and Klein took over after Westing had served two terms in that office and one term as a city councilman.

No Child Left Behind changes may affect Nebraska students

Parents may have heard a lot about No Child Left Behind and how the state’s schools have struggledto keep up. But they need tostay on top of what is going on because changes are coming. No Child Left Behind was introduced  by President George W. Bush in 2001 shortly after taking office. His vision was that American kids would reach a certain level of proficiency in their studies
