Dorothy VanHorne

Dorothy VanHorne, 85, of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away Sunday night, November 10, 2013, at the Pawnee Manor in Pawnee City. She was born to Maurice K. and Kathryn (Colwell) VanHorne on October 27, 1928, in Pawnee City. Dorothy graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1946, then earned a degree from the University of Nebraska. Dorothy taught 6th grade in Tecumseh for a brief time, then moved to Washington DC where she worked for Riggs National Bank and the Pentagon. Later she worked for many years for Houston Natural Gas in Houston, Texas, before relocating to Key Largo, Florida, where she held positions as a legal assistant and church secretary. A brain tumor in 1996 brought an early retirement for Dorothy and her return to Pawnee City, where she lived with her sister Carolyn VanHorne. Dorothy was known for her gifts of hospitality, servant’s heart, jokes, and frank opinions. In each of the places she lived, she was a faithful member of her local church choir. She played piano, organ, and most recently bells in the Southeast Nebraska Community Band. Wherever
Dorothy lived, she made lasting friendships and was lovingly addressed as Dot, Puff or Mimi by those closest to her. Dorothy is survived by her adopted daughter, Pamela Lain, and husband David of Newport, NH; granddaughter Samantha Croft and husband Kurt of Southampton, NJ; granddaughter Mary Whitman and husband Tim of Franklin, NH; grandson Jonathan Lain of Newport, NH; great-grandchildren Erin Croft and James Whitman; sisters Virginia Hasek of Williams Bay, Wisconsin, May Demkowicz and husband John of Port Orange, FL, Marjorie Leahy and husband Jerry of Fairfield, IA, and brother Maurice David VanHorne of Chicago,
IL; nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Carolyn. Funeral services were held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the  Presbyterian Church, Pawnee City, Nebraska with Reverend Duane Westing officiating.. Visitation was on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from noon to 8:00 p.m. at the Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska.
Interment was in the Pawnee City Cemetery, Pawnee City, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church, 801 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska. Condolences can be placed online at www.wherrymortuary.com
